On Nov. 15 and 16, the SMART Ride (Southern Most AIDS/HIV Ride), the annual two-day, 165-mile bicycle ride from Miami to Key West, raced through the Florida Keys to raise money for A.H. of Monroe County (formerly AIDS Help). Started in 2002, the SMART Ride was the creation of a number of individuals who had been impacted by AIDS/HIV in some way and who wanted to make a difference in the lives of people infected, affected and at risk for AIDS/HIV. Though there existed many AIDS/HIV aid organizations, the SMART Ride was born from a common desire to raise more money for those organizations via non-traditional fundraising mechanisms. Cumulatively, the SMART Ride raised $1,325,427 this year, with Key West’s own Mile Marker team outraising all other teams, to the tune of $187,828.
