It’s all in the cards for Key West psychic medium Christina Cannell. The Massachusetts-born intuitive has lived on the island since 2015 and uses tarot cards to channel and connect to spirit. Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, Cannell is arguably the best on the island. She helps locals and visitors looking for answers on love, life, business and the unknown.
Cannell’s healing energy helps her connect to each person on a profound level. She spends her days working with her husband Jon on their software business and, when her day job is over, takes time to delve into her gift — channeling the supernatural. The openers and energy of Key West are what finally sold her and her husband on making our island paradise their home after traveling between Key West and Massachusetts since 1992.
During sessions, Cannell provides tools for those seeking answers by connecting to a higher self through meditation and tarot card interpretation. Upon entering into a meditative state, she becomes a translator for spirit to work through. Spirit uses Cannell as a channel to deliver messages by ways of visions, sounds and feelings.
Cannell has been channeling spirit through tarot cards since 1993. Tarot cards are essentially fancy playing cards used for fortune-telling. Each deck contains 78 cards and four suits — typically swords, cups, pentacles and wands. In addition to the suits are 22 Major Arcana cards which represent the lessons we’re learning on our path in life.
Tarot started as a game in the 15th century in Europe, but in the late 18th century mediums began to use them for divination. When utilized for divination, the colorful cards tell a story while providing the answers we so desperately seek. The cards showcase the journey that we go on in life.
“When I give someone a tarot card reading, together we are accessing a channel of light, aligning the person with their heart, their spirit guides and their truth and allowing the person to perceive their life from a loving, healing perspective,” says Cannell.
I’ve always held an intense fascination with anything otherworldly and with anything that cannot be explained by rational thinking and science, so I was beyond excited to meet with Cannell for a reading last week. We met at a local café, which provided us with the perfect space to meditate and reflect. I had just finished an incredibly busy day and finally had the chance to sit down and sip on a delicious iced Golden Milk from the bar at Mayanjali, located inside Shakti Yoga at 1114 White St. (Side note: If you’ve never had a Golden Milk, you must.)
As Cannell set foot into the space, I was immediately presented with a ball of energy. She is a petite woman, but at 5-foot-4 she towers over my 5-foot-3 self. She has short brown hair, hazel eyes and a spirit that will make your soul melt. She is one of those women whose power you sense before they even open their mouths. I live for women like this.
We sank into the comfy leather couch and began our session. Now, if you know me, you know I believe in everything mystical and I am always up for a good reading. And what girl doesn’t want to know if her latest Bumble match is the love of her life?
After settling in, Christina walked me through what was going to happen next. She gently grabbed my hands and held them tightly. She told me to breathe, and I’m not talking about a breath to stay alive — I’m talking about a breath that makes you feel alive. The guided meditation began.
First, she walked me through each of my chakras, helping me unwind and prompting me to root myself deeply in my sit bones. Through this recitation, she began to connect with the spirit energy that was all around me. Out of the energy surrounding us, the answers suddenly started to appear before her.
Once I was in a meditative state, it was time to begin the reading. Christina began to shuffle a deck of cards. You can’t help but notice the wear and tear these cards possess, the weathered deck telling a story all its own. With a strange lack of trepidation for the world I was about to enter, I shuffled the deck a final time. With the cards in hand, I felt a sort of heaviness fall over me. I know this next part is going to sound weird, so please refrain from judging me, but I could literally feel the power come through the cards.
Of course, I had a slew of questions I wanted answers to. I’m your typical 30-something-year-old just trying to figure out this next phase of my life — business, relationships, life itself — and what better way to solve my problems than with a reading?
What I’m about to tell you next will definitely make you think this oppressive summer heat is getting to me. We pulled three cards. Each one was a clear representation of where I am now and where I’m headed in my current life. I was blown away. At this point in my reading, I was relaxed and completely in-tune. Cannell explained each card I pulled in-depth, answering any and all questions I threw her way. Cannell is a powerful intuitive healer and reader who can speak to those on the other side.
If it’s grounding and balance you seek, book an appointment with Cannell. It is an affordable and incredible experience I think every curious person should experience at least once. It brings a whole new level to a person’s perspective of life that is both mysterious and intriguing.
Cannell is available by appointment only and will come to your space. She prefers to hold sessions in her client’s homes because she can connect with the energy there and it allows for a much more comfortable reading. She also gives readings at New Age metaphysical shop, Mystical Key (605 Simonton St.) Mystical Key sells crystals, oils, cards, jewelry, books, sage and incense. The shop also hosts psychic Saturdays every last Saturday of the month. Those interested in the supernatural can have readings done for $40 for 20 minutes. There are a variety of local psychics, readers and astrologers who are all willing and able to connect with you and help guide you to the answers you need.
