Sharla Sharkey does double-duty, pouring drinks at Hank’s Hair of the Dog Saloon and The Southernmost Beach Shores Bar. Her advice to other bartenders: “Treat every customer like your favorite local.” Sounds good to us.
Original hometown: Minneapolis
Your bars: Hank’s Hair of the Dog Saloon, 409 Caroline St., Key West; 561- 509-7758 or www.hankskeywest.com. And The Southernmost Beach Shores Bar, 1319 Duval St., Key West; 305-296- 6577 or www.southernmostbeachresort.com.
What kind of drinks do you mix? It always depends on the client and sometimes the bar or time of day. Some of my favorite drinks at Hank’s are The Lavender Lemonade (lavender-infused Tito’s, fresh lemon juice, agave and a splash of lemonade) and The Hair of the Dog (jalapeño-infused tequila, Reposado tequila, fresh lime juice, passion fruit and a spritz of mezcal and chili powder).
At The Southernmost Beach Shores Bar, I love The Key Lime Colada, it’s like the taste of Key West in a cup. It’s a Sailor Jerry piña colada with a Key lime liqueur swirl.
Training: The school of hard knocks and hard work.
What’s your footwear of choice behind the bar? I go for style and comfort. I always wear my favorite pair of Vans sneakers.
What is your favorite drink? I’m a good girl. I only stay hydrated with water — really.
What advice would you give someone who wants to be a bartender? Be empathetic to all guests. People have earned their vacation time and deserve your best. Treat every customer like your favorite local.
Can you share a recipe? Sure, come to the bar and visit me and I will share lots with you. ¦
