What we truly need in life is an art-loving Thursday evening stroll along historic White Street … and Walk on White is just the ticket for such a night. Explore galleries, meet artists in their studios and visit unique local businesses, every third Thursday of the month, for special events and complimentary libations.

Enjoy opening night receptions at Stone Soup Gallery & Frame Shop (802 White St.) and Harrison Gallery (825 White St.), the oldest gallery on White Street, for new exhibitions of work by beloved local and national artists. Be treated to pottery-making demonstrations and local photography by the husband and wife team behind the newest gallery on White Street, Shade and Shutter (1102 White St.). Meet artists in their studios at the Historic Armory (600 White St.) — a building on the National Register of Historic Places and the birth place of The Studios of Key West. The Armory is now home to 12 studios of painters, designers, photographers, sculptors, writers and musicians.

Walk on White begins at the Historic Armory, on the corner of Southard and White streets, and makes its way down to United Street — or you can start at United Street and head in the opposite direction, ending at the Armory, if this takes your fancy. Whatever way you choose to stroll along this half-mile strip of galleries, studios and specialty stores, you’ll also find several restaurants to satisfy a variety of taste buds.

From its early beginnings in 1998, as a “Holiday Walk on White,” Walk on White soon evolved into a monthly event promoting local galleries and businesses that celebrated the arts. The presence of Walk on White inspired the naming of this area of Key West as the White Street Gallery District, a descriptor still used by realtors today. Twenty years on and a new generation of artists, gallerists and businesses join the originals to once again bring you Walk on White.

The next Walk on White is Thursday, Feb. 20. Join us every third Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Visit www.walkonwhitekeywest.com for more details. ¦
